The FM-01 brings a classic 4-operator FM architecture into a focused modern hardware instrument with direct front-panel control and standard MIDI connectivity.
The FM-01 is a dedicated hardware FM synthesizer designed around the YM2164 4-operator FM sound engine. It preserves the character and architecture of classic digital FM synthesis while replacing the original control system with a modern microcontroller-based interface.
A clear 16×1 display, dedicated front-panel buttons and standard MIDI connections make the instrument suitable for hands-on programming, studio integration and live use without depending on a computer.

A rare 4-operator FM chip with a distinctive place in the history of compact digital synthesizers and computer music systems.
The YM2164, also known as OPP, is Yamaha's eight-voice, 4-operator FM sound generator. It was used in the Yamaha FB-01 and SFG-05 FM Sound Synthesizer Unit II, the IBM Music Feature Card, and the Korg DS-8 and 707 synthesizers.
The FM-01 uses an original YM2164 IC rather than recreating it in software or on a general-purpose DSP. The FM algorithms, register behaviour and internal timing are produced by the original Yamaha silicon.
Modern emulations can be accurate and convenient, but they reproduce the chip's behaviour in code. The FM-01 is built around the actual hardware sound engine used in the original instruments.
